Description

PURPOSE: THE OVERARCHING GOAL OF THE LONG ISLAND QUANTUM INTERNET CENTER IS TO BUILD AND DEPLOY A QUANTUM NETWORK TESTBED THAT CAN BE ACCESSED FROM THE CLOUD TO INVESTIGATE APPLICATIONS THAT LEVERAGE AN ENTANGLEMENT DISTRIBUTION NETWORK. THE AWARD WILL BE USED TO SUPPORT AND PROVIDE TRAINING AND EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES TO POST-DOCTORAL AND GRADUATE STUDENTS. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE AWARDED FUNDS WILL BE USED TO PAY THE STIPENDS OF POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHERS AND GRADUATE STUDENTS CARRYING OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT THE QUANTUM INTERNET CENTER. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: THE BUILDING OF LONG-DISTANCE ENTANGLEMENT-ON-DEMAND CAPABILITIES IN A SINGLE TESTBED, WILL ENABLE USERS TO ACCESS A WHOLE NEW RANGE OF APPLICATIONS, SUCH AS DISTRIBUTED QUANTUM COMPUTING, NETWORKED QUANTUM SENSING, ENHANCED OPTICAL INTERFEROMETRY AND QUANTUM NETWORKS OF ATOMIC CLOCKS. THE AWARDED FUNDS WILL INCREASE ACCESS OPPORTUNITIES AND SUPPORT THE TRAINING OF A QUANTUM-READY WORKFORCE.INTENDED BENEFICIARIES: THE DIRECT BENEFICIARIES ARE THE STUDENTS WHO WILL RECEIVE HANDS ON TRAINING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT. FOLLOWING THIS, THE WORKS UNDERTAKE WILL ADVANCE THE DEVELOPMENT AND UNDERSTANDING OF QUANTUM NETWORKS AND CRITICALLY ENABLING COMPONENTS.
