Description

The purpose of this Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research is to provide additional mentorship and training opportunities for a researcher with a disability as described in the American with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended, to advance their long-term career goals along with the research objectives of NIH award R35GM133483 “Complex Mechanisms of Mutation and Mutation Avoidance in Living Cells.” The candidate has a long-term career goal to work in biomedical research. Earlier in 2023, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and a local disabilities advocacy organization determined, after discussing with several prospective employers, that the candidate would benefit from a research internship in order to address some specific deficiencies identified by the prospective employers in their CV. The candidate was placed for a short-term internship in the laboratory of the PI of the parent award. The purpose of this award is to support the candidate beyond the period where support by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services has ended to further their computational skills and help to make them more competitive for their long-term career goals. During this award period, the candidate will advance research objectives of the R35 award by applying new computational techniques in order to help unravel the functional biology of viral dynamics and mechanisms of intra-host viral mutation.
