Abstract

A ponderous amount has been written on the subject of modernism, but worthwhile things remain to be said about the relationship between philosophy and art in the modern era, especially where the art in question is film. In what follows I offer an account of the way modernist art in general is supposed to work, and then I attempt to apply this description to Stanley Kubrick’s unique MGM science-fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Doing so can help us to understand both this strange movie and the very idea of a modernist or avant-garde film.
