Abstract

Chapter III discusses front tracking for reservoir simulation. An interface is introduced as a computational degreee of freedom, and basic variables either discontinuous or else with discontinuous derivatives across these interfaces. Describes application to the water coning problem. Equations in cylindrical coordinates are developed. The method also requires mesh alignment, use of Riemann problem solutions and structured programming. Discusses new developments i.e. 1) higher order elements in the pressure solution, 2) tangential regularization of interface velocities and 3) one-dimensional mesh refinement. Demonstrates the high resolution capabilities of front tracking in validation studies of the oil/water coning interface. (C.J.U.)
