Abstract
The US needs to adopt a new approach based on restoration to prevent the fisheries stock from depleting significantly. The fisheries stock of the country has depleted considerably due to poor management by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and poor selection by many fishers. The government will need to redirect many subsidies provided to the industry to support efforts to develop cleaner technologies. These efforts also need to focus on easing the social problem that the fishers and their communities will potentially face in adopting such technologies. The stakeholders of the fisheries industry need to work jointly to overcome the problem of depleting fisheries resources. Fishers, fishery managers, and scientists also need to make joint efforts to better inform the public about the conditions and needs of the country's fishing industry and fish stocks.
