Abstract
An apparatus suitable for the study of electrostatic forces by physics undergraduates is described. By using an electronic scale to measure the force between the plates of a charged capacitor, students can verify the inverse square exponent of Coulomb's law and check the value of the permittivity of air to an accuracy of 1-2 percent.
