A study of d=4 U(1) lattice gauge theory with monopoles removed

Abstract

We show via Monte Carlo simulation that if monopoles are eliminated from 4D U(1) lattice gauge theory, the system does not undergo a phase transition. This provide direct evidence for the essential role of monopoles in the phase transition in pure lattice QED.
