Abdominoperineal resection for cancer of the distal rectum

Abstract

Despite many advances in sphincter preservation techniques for cancer of the distal rectum, abdominoperineal resection is still required in up to 20% of cases of rectal cancer. Preoperative assessment, operative technique, management, and complications of this surgical approach are reviewed.
