Abstract

A method for synthesis of single-crystalline nanowires of alkaline-earth metal fluoride nanowires was investigated. The purity and crystallinity of alkaline-earth metal fluoride samples were characterized using power X-ray diffraction. CaF2 products were fabricated using polycarbonate membranes with pore sizes as small as 50 nm, consisting of straight nanowires with uniform, homogeneous size. The diameters of CaF2 nanowires obtained were in the range of 50∓5 nm. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) analysis confirmed that the CaF2 nano wire is single crystalline, without any obvious defects or dislocations. The slightly increased surface roughness of the nanowires compared to those of ABO4 reflects local differenced in smoothness oinnerinnner surfaces of polycarbonate versus alumina membrane pores.
