Abstract
In the wide bandgap (WBG) devices era, fast switching has become a norm for long cable motor drives. The existence of overvoltage due to impedance mismatch between load and cable, and high dv/dt are major concerns to motor insulation and filter design. The process being called as reflected wave phenomenon (RWP) causes converter side overcurrent in addition to load side overvoltage. Modeling of high-frequency cable for predicting overvoltage and overcurrent is significant in numerous applications, including electrified transportation and microgrids. This paper proposes a frequency sweep-based cable model considering skin and proximity effects for three-phase power cable modeling. The paper provides comparative studies on cascaded cable models with and without skin and proximity effect considerations, for investigating motor drive overvoltage. Simulation scenarios of motor drives with various cable lengths, and voltage levels are validated with experimental results. The proposed cable model shows improvement over conventional cable modeling efforts. The paper also provides a flow chart for extendable modelling of three phase cables.
