Abstract
The major product arising from the reaction of epichlorohydrin and unbuffered potassium cyanide solution, aside, from water-soluble polymers, is shown, largely by physical means, to be irans-3,4-dihydro-2-cyano-3-hydroxymethyl-4-hydroxyaniline (I). A seven-step mechanism for its formation is proposed.
