Abstract
Pigmented lesions of childhood are a frequent indication for referral to a pediatric surgeon. The majority of lesions are benign. However, in the rare instance of melanoma, some believe that pediatric outcomes are worse than those in adults. This poses the challenge of choosing which lesions can be observed and which should be biopsied. Adding to this difficulty is that some lesions possess both benign and malignant features. It is therefore important for a surgeon to become familiar with those disorders for which there is established therapy and those whose management is less well-defined.
