Abstract
Beam dynamics for heavy ions are investigated for the particular case of a high beam quality linac. Such a situation exists in a booster linac, which receives a low emittance beam from a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator, in particular when the linac operates in cw mode, as would be the case in a cryogenic linac. The theoretical calculations are made for a novel energy-correcting chopper, a buncher and a few linac sections employing magnetic lenses placed between the linac sections. The degradation of the beam quality is calculated in each case using approximations valid in this previously untreated regime, and linked to the beam properties and accelerator parameters. Numerical examples are given for a heavy-ion beam.
