Abstract
This chapter summarizes the nature and strategies of behavioral assessment, reviews the current status of workplace job skill assessment and the relationship of mental health problems with job attainment and sustained employment. The chapter also reviews the prevalence and correlates of primary work-related emotional and behavioral problems, and discusses the internal and external mechanisms through which behavioral assessment strategies may be implemented. It presents special considerations and practical issues of relevance to workplace assessment, and concludes with a case study that exemplifies a multimethod approach to the behavioral assessment of work-related issues. Given the multimethod approach and multicontext utility of behavioral assessment strategies, along with the need to conduct efficient and objective psychological assessments to meet the demands of a managed health care environment, behavior assessment may be an optimal means toward assessing work-related issues.
