Bichromatic slowing and collimation to make an intense helium beam

Abstract

The use of bichromatic forces (BF) for slowing and collimating helium atoms was analyzed. Investigations show that the collimation capture range corresponds to ≅0.18 radians in only 50 mm interaction length. It was found that both slowing and collimation were accomplished in the unprecedented short distance of ≅5 cm. It was concluded that BF was well suited for improving the intensity, brightness and brilliance of atomic beams.
