Abstract

The article gives an overview on the various forms and impacts of bioirrigation by benthic organisms in muddy and sandy sediments. Through their bioirrigation activities infaunal organisms establish extremely dynamic geochemical conditions in sediments and strongly influence biogeochemical processes, including the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and metals. Various approaches to study bioirrigation and animal-sediment relationships in marine sediments are presented. Video clips supplementing this article highlight the dynamic character of bioturbated sediments.
