N2 - Islet transplantation is a potential therapy for type 1 diabetes (T1D), but it is expensive due to limited pancreas donors and the great level of variability in the obtained islets. The culture of islets with stem cells to promote their basement membrane recovery and enable expression of angiogenic factors for enhancing vascularization is currently being explored. However, given the wide heterogeneity in islet size, shape and functionality, there are no markers to monitor their reorganization during the co-culture. We present a method to monitor the reorganization of single islets by normalizing their biomechanical markers to account for their heterogeneous properties.
