Abstract

We study the instanton liquid model of the QCD vacuum with the help of Monte Carlo simulations. At large instanton densities the pseudoparticle system crystallizes. At phenomenologically interesting densities it is in a liquid phase. For three massless flavors we find strong correlations which manifest themselves as a dip in the spectrum around zero. However, when we use phenomenological values for the current quark masses, these correlations are strongly reduced leading to a qualitatively different spectrum. In this case the dip resembles a finite-size effect. Also for two massless flavors or less the dip is not present in the thermodynamic limit.
