Abstract
We used counterpropagating beams of diode laser light forming a one-dimensional optical molasses perpendicular to an atomic beam of 85Rb for active collimation. The minimum measured angular spread of the beam we achieved corresponds to a transverse rms speed of 3 cm/s, well below νD= (7łhγ/20M), 1 2= 10 cm/s corresponding to ordinary one-dimensional Doppler molasses.Achieving this low velocity, limited only by experimental geometry, depends on a magnetic field of ≈ 20 μT applied perpendicular to the axis of the circularly polarized light beam.
