Abstract

The operation of peer-review process is analyzed when the National Tritium Labeling Facility (NTLF) passed out of existence. The NTLF carried out between 15 and 20 projects a year for paying users, and a similar number of collaborative projects with outsiders who worked with NTLF scientists on latest techniques and applications. Projects included research on anaesthetics, pharmaceuticals, nuclear batteries for medical implants, and processes for converting methane to methanol. Scientists have a stake in fostering conditions for a healthy review process in all fields, and it is easier for those who do not obtain their funding from an agency to protest its abuses.
