Abstract
Discusses criteria for the selection or construction of borrow pit disposal sites with emphasis on the New York area. Presents the assumptions made (fine grained, often contaminated sediment, discharge in water less than 67 m deep etc). Studies indicate that almost all the sand and silt should be deposited quickly. Discusses observations of bottom surges and side slope shape, and implications for forecasting the form of a deposit. Refers to work by the US Army Corps of Engineers Dredged Material Research Program on the quantification of the losses of energy and notes monitoring of surge energy in New York Harbour. Suggests that the pit floor should be deeper than 1 m below the ambient sea floor everywhere within 113 m of the discharge point. Prediction of possible future erosion remains difficult.
