Abstract

We demonstrate experimentally a photonic crystal nanocavity with an ultrasmall modal volume of 10-2(λ/n)3, based on a designed air-slot in a two-dimensional photonic crystal lattice. Coupling to the tightly localized nanocavity of the fabricated sample is achieved with the tapered fiber, with strong applications to nonlinear optics and cavity quantum electrodynamics studies.
