Abstract

We study access point (AP) placement for uplink phase-coherent localization in distributed MIMO systems. While distributed deployments enable high-accuracy localization, they also introduce strong sidelobes that can lead to ambiguities. To address this, we formulate and solve an optimization problem over AP locations using ambiguity-function-based metrics. We consider both worst-case and average-case criteria and evaluate several optimization methods. Simulation results in indoor scenarios demonstrate that optimized AP deployments can significantly reduce sidelobe levels and improve localization robustness, offering practical guidelines for infrastructure design in future 6G systems.
