Determining Marine Sediment Chronologies With Radionuclides

Abstract

Radionuclides with half-lives ranging from 24days to 1.5Ma can be used to determine rates of mixing of marine sediments by infauna and rates of sediment accumulation. These sediment chronologies can be applied to inputs of various paleoceanographic proxies, enabling reconstruction of past ocean conditions. This article reviews the radionuclides commonly used and gives examples.
