Abstract
Of all the suggested mechanisms for solar activity influences on climate, the solar UV/planetary wave mechanism has been investigated most carefully in a manner that allows comparison with observations. Some historical background, the observations, and modeling investigations of this mechanism are briefly discussed in this review so that the following more detailed papers can be put into context.
