Abstract
We map out the confinement-deconfinement phase boundary in 4D U(1) lattice gauge theory as a function of the coupling β and a parameter μ which suppresses or enhances monopoles. A similarity is pointed out between the massless, deconfined phase for μ = ∞ and the massless phases of the KDP and F vertex models and of models for interfacial roughening.
