Early intervention for multiple sclerosis 2. Current clinical studies demonstrating the benefits of early treatment intervention to reduce progression

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

There are six FDA-approved disease-modifying treatments with documented value in the treatment of MS. The DMDs are indicated for relapsing forms of MS. Based on major clinical trials, they have demonstrated better efficacy when treatment is initiated early. This also appears to be true for first attack, high-risk patients with CIS, who are most likely to have relapsing MS. Treatment with DMDs has maximum economic value when they markedly delay or prevent the development of disabling progressive disease. Current data from multiple clinical trials support both short-term and long-term benefits of therapy with disease-modifying treatments.
