Efficient production of purified hydrogen via low temperature water-gas-shift reaction

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

Methane derived hydrogen contains copious amount of carbon monoxide the presence of which is detrimental to catalysts used in PEM fuel cells. We have designed a single-site organometallic complex that dissolves in liquid phase to efficiently catalyze water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction under very mild conditions. The catalyst has been evaluated in batch mode by dissolving in a methanol/water mixture to process synthesis gas with high turnover numbers at temperatures as low as 80°C under pressures < 1 MPa to yield a gas mixture that is essentially devoid of CO. The thermodynamic basis and the application of this technology will be discussed.
