Abstract
The energy efficiency of a data center (DC) is determined by implementation of best practices. One of the major costs to operate data centers is cooling power to maintain safe operating environment for servers and IT equipment (ITE). Power consumption in data centers is largely governed by the ITE power consumption and the power spent to maintain cooling that enable safe operating conditions for ITE. This chapter describe here a new monitoring solution based on spatial and temporal benchmarking of data center using the measurement and management technology (MMT) to drive toward quantitative measurement-driven DC best practice implementation. Simple energy efficiency metrics can be calculated from high spatial–temporal measurements that can be easily translated into best operating practices to improve energy efficiency recommendations. The measurement and recommendation methods apply both to legacy and newly designed data centers.
