Abstract

We describe here a method for rendering a large class of polymer flame retardant using the synergy between functionalized clay and various flame retardant agents. The inclusion of the clays allows for better dispersion of the flame retardant agents, confinement of the gas phase reactants, and facilitating the solid state reactions. The clays improve the mechanical properties in the melt state, thereby preventing dripping. Reducing the amount of flame retardant also prevent significant degradation of the polymer mechanical properties.
