Abstract

The quadrupole moments of proton isomers in ^208,210,211Rn show a drastic increase over the N = 126 closed neutron shell isotope ²¹²Rn. The increase - although consistently understood in the deformed independent-particle model - only indicates a minor deformation of the core when pair scattering into excited high-spin orbitals is taken into account properly.
