Abstract
The quadrupole moments of proton isomers in 208,210,211Rn show a drastic increase over the N = 126 closed neutron shell isotope 212Rn. The increase - although consistently understood in the deformed independent-particle model - only indicates a minor deformation of the core when pair scattering into excited high-spin orbitals is taken into account properly.
