Abstract
The replacement of graphite by alternative moderators can provide options for radical design, reduced size, increased performance and reduced operational costs. A proposed moderator of MgO- δZrH1.6 is demonstrated via a dispersion of heat-treated t-ZrH2 within a sintered MgO matrix. The consolidation proceeds via rapid MgO sintering, sufficient to retain ~50% of the original hydrogen content. A continuous, porous MgO phase forms around the hydride material. The paper discusses the potential of this material and future directions.
