Abstract

Across the global ocean, migratory fish display a variety of behaviors in the horizontal plane. The diversity of these behaviors has historically been categorized into groups based on areas of prominent residence, spawning, rearing, and feeding. This article reviews the four common migratory behaviors and fish which exemplify them: anadromy, catadromy, amphidromy, and oceanodromy. Then, mechanisms of migration, and the roles of tidal streams and ocean currents in migration are summarized. Finally, the development and utility of electronic tagging technologies in the context of horizontal migration studies are presented, in addition to a recently highlighted migratory phenomenon: partial migration.
