Abstract

The feasibility of replacing conventional UO2 fuel assemblies of the existing LWR fleet with accident-tolerant FCM FAs has been investigated. Candidate FCM fuel designs that exhibit comparable levels of power generation and heat transfer as conventional UO2 fuel were screened and optimized for their compatibility in terms of neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and mechanical performance. For the selected FCM FA designs, the FCM coated fuel particle performance over the lifetime was evaluated and the level of accident-tolerance was assessed against limiting design-basis-accidents and beyond-design-basis-accidents. In addition, the FCM fuel samples are fabricated and irradiated for their thermal and mechanical properties. The reference core selected for this assessment is the OPR-1000 core with 16x16 FAs.
