Abstract

Giant pulse generation in a storage ring free electron laser using gain modulator was analyzed. Gain modulator periodically moved closed orbit of electron beam in FEL region away from the axis of the optical cavity for giant pulse operation. The dynamic characteristics of the modulator were obtained with synchrotron radiation of the electron beam coming from a bending magnet. The performance of FEL was well characterized and a good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental results was obtained.
