Abstract
The collapse of the core of a massive star and the subsequent birth of a neutron star in a supernova explosion are discussed, and a model of the supernova mechanism is developed. The basic theory is then compared with the particular case of SN 1987 A, whose emitted neutrinos permitted the first direct test of the model.
