Abstract
The implantable defibrillator, under development since the mid-1970s, presents a particular challenge to the battery developer. A cell for use in implantable defibrillators has been developed. The cell consists of a lithium anode, an organic liquid electrolyte solution, and a solid cathode material made up of silver vanadium oxide (SVO) combined with conducting material and a Teflon binder. The resultant battery has been shown to be safe and effective for its intended use. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the basic design features and present the performance of this battery.
