Abstract
'Historical sociology' is the systematic examination of the past to inform and reconstruct empirical findings and theories about the world. Its roots lie with sociology's classical founders, but it experienced vibrant growth and reconstruction after World War II. Today it is characterized by methodological pluralism, as well as a wide engagement with social-scientific questions of large-scale social change, the emergence and institutionalization of modern societies, and the epistemological foundations of social science history.
