Horror stories that grow legs

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

The role played by media in projecting old scientific and horror stories and the parallel drawn between such stories and the melodramatic structure of popular films is discussed. The reporters seem to listen carefully as the technical aspects are outlined in detail and then write the stories that exaggerate, distort or falsify information that makes captivating reading but has harmful effects. Media coverage of science is a complex and wide-ranging subject and horror stories are only its genres. These stories are interesting because they highlight the potential relevance of fields such as media studies for the welfare of contemporary science.
