Abstract
The various design approaches of Hewlett Packard's image processing accelerator, OpenGL's visualization extensions, and Sun's Visualization Instructions Set (VIS) are presented. HP's design which incorporates a low cost single chip architecture responds to current market demand for 2D applications such as filtering, resampling, and data mapping. OpenGL merges 2D and 3D graphics, n-dimension image processing into a single interactive visualization package. Sun's VIS provides a powerful imaging and multimedia engine that does not require expensive additional hardware. It is ideal for compute-intensive tasks such as image processing, video compression and decompression, and volume rendering.
