Abstract

The definitive treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism is surgery. Historically, as patients presented with clear complications of this disease, the value of surgery was not debated. However, with patients now typically being identified earlier in their disease course, the value and need for surgery have become a more relevant clinical question. This chapter reviews the sequelae of hyperparathyroidism and discusses the debate surrounding the indications for surgery.
