Abstract
This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains 'The Academic Music Machine', the concepts of 'machine', 'assemblage' and 'machinic assemblage' introduce a Deleuzian approach to thinking about the entity of the tertiary music institution. The Oxford Dictionary defines assemblage as 'the fitting together of a number of components'. Joseph Williams takes up the Deleuzian concept of 'assemblage' to address the divisions that have emerged between practice and theory, and between the various practice-driven approaches themselves. The book also provides 'Deleuzian Encounters', and the challenge of encountering identity, drawing on Deleuzian modes of thought. In the spirit of Deleuze and Guattari, the book presents a cartography in which some of the representational modes of listening are critiqued while exploring the concept of 'immanent listening'. As Colebrook remarks, immanence is one of the key terms and aims of Deleuzian philosophy.
