Abstract
At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, analogue signal transfer on optical links would offer significant advantages in signal to noise ratio and allow the reduction of complexity and power dissipation of the front-end electronics, with increased overall reliability. It is presently envisaged to multiplex 128 detector channels into one optical line, thus requiring over 100,000 optical links in an experiment. External modulation, using electro-optic intensity modulators mounted on detectors with remotely located cw lasers and receivers, can meet the power dissipation and radiation hardness constraints.
