Long-term leaching and chemical weathering of coal fly Ash: Policy implications

Abstract

The study of the long-term leaching and chemical weathering of coal fly ash, was carried out at the Recycled Materials Resource Center, University of New Hampshire. The object was to develop a new product, synthetic lightweight aggregate (SAL), from two materials, namely, waste plastics and fly ash. SLA was evaluated for use in construction applications such as geotechnical lightweight fill, concrete masonry blocks, and lightweight concrete structures. The results show that over a period of 20 years, measurable changes occur in certain properties, but amorphous 'core' remains.
