Management of Lyme disease

Lyme disease is an important emerging infection. It is caused by a tick-borne spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, which causes a variety of early and late infection syndromes. Diagnosis and management are hampered because it is difficult to culture or stain organisms in clinical samples. Recent advances in the understanding of potential organism-vector-host factors involved in disease, and improved diagnostic and preventive measures, are leading to better management of this major disorder.
