Abstract
The study to be presented has been carried out to narrow the uncertainty (presently about a factor of seven) in the gas phase mutagenic activity. The uncertainty arises primarily from the accuracy with which the actual plate dose can be measured and is related to the fraction of mutagenic material in the gas phase which actually deposits into the biological medium. The test using this procedure can only measure gas phase mutagens which are soluble (in a medium which is more than 90% water) and thus polar. In addition, compounds which are polar do not necessarily completely dissolve into the biological medium. The reported experiments have been designed to address these issues.
