Metalloporphyrin containing carbon paste electrodes

Abstract

Iron and manganese tetraphenylporphyrin chlorides can be dissolved in 1-nonanol and mixed into a carbon paste electrode which in aqueous buffer exhibits the classic metal(III/II) cyclic voltammetry. The voltammetric formal potential shifts negatively by 60 mV/pH unit, and enhanced, electrocatalytic currents are observed in the presence of dioxygen. Analysis of the chronoamperometric behavior of porphyrin-containing carbon pastes reveals a short-time linear/semi-infinite diffusion response which at longer times shows evidence of thin film (finite diffusion) reactant depletion at the carbon paste-water interface.
