Abstract
Microglia have the potential for shaping the formation of new oligodendrocytes and controlling myelination and remyelination through direct and indirect mechanisms. Likewise, oligodendrocytes have functions that go beyond myelin production and extend to modulating microglial behavior and activation. Here, we review the effects of microglia on oligodendrocytes in both physiological and pathological conditions. We focus on the outcomes of the microglia-oligodendrocyte interaction in terms of myelination, oligodendrocyte differentiation, oligodendrocyte death, and remyelination while highlighting the influence of the activation state of microglia on the outcome of such interactions.
