Abstract

In this article, we provide a historical account of studies of the biological basis of personality, reviewing studies of gene–trait associations, endophenotypes, whole-genome associations, and gene-by-environment interactions. Taken together, this body of research highlights the importance of developing a molecular psychological approach in order to uncover the underlying mechanisms by which genetic and environmental variables affect behavior.
