Abstract

We study monopole excitations in 4D U(1) lattice gauge theory with unit-charge Higgs fields using analytic and Monte Carlo techniques. We also determine the effect on the phase structure of a parameter μ which suppresses monopoles. It is found that the Coulomb-confinement and Higgs-confinement transitions are monopole driven, while the Coulomb-Higgs transition is insensitive to the presence of monopoles.
